Rising mercury levels a concern in 2024

Lucknow: In 2024,  temperatures are exceptionally high due to a combination of several factors:

  1. El Niño Event: A strong El Niño phenomenon has emerged, which typically results in warmer global temperatures. El Niño affects weather patterns worldwide, causing increased temperatures in many regions, particularly during the summer months.
  2. Climate Change: Long-term climate change driven by greenhouse gas emissions continues to raise global average temperatures. The accumulation of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere traps more heat, leading to overall warming.
  3. Heatwaves: Many regions are experiencing prolonged and intense heatwaves. These heatwaves are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change, exacerbating the already high summer temperatures.
  4. Urban Heat Island Effect: Urban areas are experiencing higher temperatures than rural areas due to the urban heat island effect. This is caused by the extensive use of concrete, asphalt, and other materials that absorb and retain heat, as well as the lack of green spaces.
  5. Deforestation and Land Use Changes: Deforestation and changes in land use reduce the natural cooling effect provided by trees and vegetation. This contributes to higher local temperatures and reduces the ability of ecosystems to regulate temperature.
  6. Sea Surface Temperatures: Warmer sea surface temperatures, partly due to the ongoing climate change, contribute to higher temperatures on land. The oceans play a critical role in regulating climate, and their warming leads to increased heat in the atmosphere.

These factors combined create conditions for higher temperatures globally, with significant impacts on weather patterns, ecosystems, and human health.
